Passing of George L. Miller
Dear SHA Members,
It is with great sadness that SHA announces the passing of George L. Miller (b. 1942) on September 10, 2025. A Detroit native, George attended Wayne State University, getting his first archaeological job on Mackinac Island in 1965. Over the course of his long career, George worked at Nauvoo, the Franklin Glass Works, Historic St. Mary’s City, Parks Canada, Colonial Williamsburg, the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Delaware, and the URS Corporation. George’s research interests in ceramics and glass produced an impressive number of important publications and he was a generous mentor to countless students, many of whom have made archaeology their careers. George was a charter member of the Society for Historical Archaeology, attending the Society’s first meeting in Dallas in 1967. He was awarded the J. C. Harrington Medal in Historical Archaeology in 2012. George is survived by his wife, Amy Earls.
