Associate Historical Archaeologist

Location: Any Æ office

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. has an immediate opening for an Associate Historical Archaeologists. This is a regular, full-time position for ongoing projects located throughout central and southern California.

Pay Range: $29 - $40/hour

Participate in cultural resource projects of a historic archaeological nature under the direction of senior Historical Archaeology staff and other managers. Job duties include: developing and implementing project research designs and treatment plans; supervising field and laboratory staff; technical report writing; maintaining project schedules and budgets; and proposal preparation.

Experience working on investigations at historic period sites and experience in analysis of historical materials are valuable in this position.

Skill Requirements: • Experience in historical archaeology fieldwork including testing and data recovery, lab processing, and/or technical analysis; • An interest in 19th and 20th century historical archaeological research issues; • Proficient in archival research (including various online databases) • Proficient in the use and analysis of various historic maps and aerial photography; • Preparation of records searches, NAHC requests, and outreach to local historical organizations; • Advanced skillset with GPS/GNSS data capture and digitize sites with EOS Arrow and iPad; understands and can develop the Field Maps data dictionary with GIS team as project requires; support field staff with the Field Maps and Survey123 applications; • Understanding of the Harris Matrix recording system, principles of site stratigraphy and the ability to construct Harris Matrices; • Ability to work cooperatively with construction contractors, tribal monitors, and other project stakeholders; • Working understanding of CRM laws and regulations including Section 106 and CEQA; • Advanced technical writing skills and knowledge of report and DPR preparation; • Understanding of basic proposal preparation; • Ability to work independently on most tasks; and • Reliability, strong written and oral communication skills; and strong work ethic.

Education/Experience: • M.A. degree in history, historical archaeology, or related field required. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification preferred. • Minimum of 3 years of field supervisory or management experience in CRM. • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.
